As a sub-consultant to Duffield Associates, Inc., BSG performed an underwater structural inspection of Docks 3A and 3B of Sunoco NER’s Marcus Hook Refinery. During this routine inspection, the dive team identified several areas of advanced corrosion that threatened the stability of the structure and called for temporary closing of the pier until a structural analysis could be completed. This analysis allowed the pier to reopen with loading restricted to pedestrian access until repairs were completed. This project highlighted the flexibility of our dive team, as the dive team operated in an on-call basis over a four-month timeframe to complete this project to accommodate Sunoco’s busy and often unpredictable shipping schedule.
Our scope of work included the following:
– Above- and below-water inspection, including ultrasonic thickness readings, underwater video, and corrosion potential measurements
– Emergency repair recommendations
BSG’s marine engineering department continues to provide underwater inspection services for projects such as structural inspections and debris surveys. We have established a history of working with clients in the petroleum, transportation, and shipping industries.
