Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU) is the largest private university in New Jersey and has two campuses (Madison and Teaneck). With enrollment over 10,000 students and growing, FDU needed more residential housing for their students. This project started by locating the site on campus and by determining the size of the dormitory. It was decided to locate the dormitory adjacent to Twombly Hall. The scope of work for the new building calls for a 5-story, 90,000-square-foot building that will house over 300 students. BSG provided construction documents and construction phase services for the mechanical and electrical services for a new 312-bed dormitory at Fairleigh Dickinson University. The new facility is completely air-conditioned and is fully connected to the campus technology and CATV systems. The design challenge for this project was to create a building that was fully air-conditioned and fully wired for growing technology needs. This all had to be accomplished while keeping the building footprint to a minimum. Our design incorporated a four-pipe heating/cooling system with fan coil units in each dormitory room for individual temperature control while creating an energy efficient system. This system allows simultaneous heating and/or cooling for students. Also, each dormitory room was designed with internet connections, telephone, and provisions for future expansion of systems. BSG services for this project included complete construction drawings and specification, bidding and assistance, shop drawing review, review of payment applications, and construction site visits.
