Birdsall Services Group (BSG) was selected by the Middlesex County Board of Chosen Freeholders for the improvements to a county road (C.R. 616) through the business district of Woodbridge Township, NJ. The roadway also acts as a secondary access for the Raritan Center Industrial Park and Route 440/I-287. Conceptual design alternatives were developed to investigate operational improvements, increase capacity for on-street parking, and accommodate high-volume turns at specific signalized intersections. Four signalized intersections included alternatives to evaluate operations for capacity improvements and operational enhancements. Since high truck volumes are experienced along this section of the roadway, turning radii were investigated to improve turning radii at intersections for truck movements.


This was a full service design project, which involved field survey, traffic data collection, pavement coring programs, and field investigation to identify existing conditions. The design involved road widening, drainage improvements, utility relocations, new traffic signal installations, sidewalk and curb reconstruction, removal of trolley track foundations, and pavement reconstructions.


Streetscape elements were also implemented into the project, which included decorative pavements, pedestrian scale lighting, and street shade tree planting with decorative tree pit grating.
