Beth Israel Medical Center Parking Structure

Newark, New Jersey

Three separate parking garages were built in 1977, 1989 and 1995 at Beth Israel Medical Center's Newark, NJ facility. Due to a number of problems at each structure, DVB was retained to investigate the problems, determine the causes and develop repair solutions to maintain the facilities in operating condition. The oldest structure is a 4-story braced/moment frame steel structure with concrete floor slabs made composite with precast VIP joists. The 1989 structure is a 4-story precast concrete system. The newest garage consists of a 9-story steel moment frame system utilizing composite, precast filigree wide-slabs with a post-tensioned topping.

Drainage problems, steel connection failures, precast facade cracking, bearing pad damage, spall repairs and expansion joint problems were among the issues that needed to be addressed. Preliminary budget figures were obtained by preparing early pricing documents. A comprehensive repair contract is in final design to suit the client's available budget.

Since 2002, DVB has performed structural design services on a "call-in" basis for all of the hospital's structural work.
