Structural Design

Morristown Memorial Hospital

Morristown, New Jersey

This complex project is the first in a series of projects for a $190 million major expansion of the MMH Morristown campus. This 120,000 square foot north tower addition involves a vertical and horizontal expansion of existing steel and concrete-frame structures. The added space required retrofitting and strengthening of the existing structures' lateral systems to meet BOCA 1996 seismic and wind load requirements. Additional cross-bracing and column reinforcement were introduced into the existing structures to resist the added seismic loads.

The southern portion of the tower is a 3-story steel moment frame utilizing a 32-foot column grid, supported by a 2-story concrete frame structure with a 20-foot bay arrangement. This mismatch required large transfer beams to make the transition between structures. Other key elements included a new 5-story elevator tower expansion, rooftop penthouse and cooling towers, shop fabricated brick veneer panel system, and a new 2-story, 10,000 square foot chiller plant facility with hung mezzanine.

As the Engineer of Record for a majority of the original MMH campus buildings, DVB has provided on-call engineering services for Morristown Hospital for the last 20 years.
