In June 2001, the Township of Dover, in coordination with Birdsall Services Group (BSG), was awarded a $170,000 grant (#RP01-094) by the NJ Department of Environmental Protection's Division of Watershed Management. The grant provides funding for the development of a Strategic Water Quality Improvement Plan for the Long Swamp Creek Watershed in Ocean County, NJ.
The purpose of the project is to develop a watershed management plan designed to coordinate and prioritize specific nonpoint source pollution (NPS) reduction strategies throughout the watershed and implement a public education and outreach program that involves the measurement of effective public outreach materials and increases citizen awareness of how to reduce NPS pollutants. The project also includes a budgeted reserve for the implementation of a high priority in-the-ground restoration project that was selected from the developed strategic plan. The ultimate goal of the project is to reduce the total amount of NPS pollutants generated and discharged within the watershed.
These two resources provide township officials, resource agencies, watershed management groups and interested citizens with a prioritized list of restoration projects that addresses the severity of existing impairments, effectiveness of the projects to remedy impairments, property acquisition or easement requirements, permitting requirements and cost estimates.
