Bayshore Ferry Terminal

Middletown, New Jersey

Birdsall Engineering, Inc. (BEI) was retained by the Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders to help design a state-of-the-art commuter ferry terminal to operate between the Bayshore area of Middletown Township, NJ and New York, NY.

Services provided by BEI included site planning, extensive land and hydro surveying, design services for a new access road and vehicular bridge, traffic studies, environmental impact statements, wetlands mitigation, beach nourishment, dredging, permitting, engineering design, construction administration, landscape architecture and coordination with the US Army Corps of Engineers.

Permit conditions required that 13.2 acres of salt marsh wetlands be created to mitigate the disturbance of approximately 6.6 acres of existing coastal and freshwater wetlands. BEI designed the new wetlands mitigation area and supervised the implementation of the mitigation plan.

Unique to the wetlands mitigation design was the mining of the Belford Landfill adjacent to Ware Creek, which created the 13.2 acres of wetlands and consolidated the footprint of the Belford Landfill. The mined portion of the landfill provided clean material for the landfill closure operation and also created the mitigation area.
